چکیده

[1] The ISUAL experiment on the FORMOSAT-2 satellite has confirmed the existence of ionization and Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) band emissions in elves. In this paper, an in-depth study of the ISUAL recorded elves was carried out. Numerical simulation results of elves based on an electromagnetic finite difference time domain (FDTD) model of the emissions between 185–800 nm and of their spatial-temporal evolution are presented. To account for the effect of atmospheric attenuation, three major attenuation mechanisms: O2, O3, and molecular Rayleigh scattering are considered. Validations of the electromagnetic FDTD model were conducted in three ways: by comparing the calculated and observed photon fluxes in the ISUAL spectrophotometric channels, by directly comparing the simulated and observed morphologies of elves, and by comparing the computed photon counts of the ISUAL Imager based on the derived peak currents for two elve-associated NLDN (National Lightning Detection Network) cloud-to-ground discharges (CGs) with those recorded by the ISUAL Imager. In all three ways, very good agreement was achieved.

Early VLF perturbations observed in association with elves

VLF remote sensing is used to detect lowerionospheric electron density changes associated with a certain type of transient luminous events known as elves. Both groundand satellite-based observations of elves are analysed in relation to VLF data acquired at various receiver sites in Europe, the United States and Antarctica. Ground-based observations were performed during the EuroSprite2003 campa...

Processing of FORMOSAT-2 imagery for site surveillance

The successful launch of FORMOSAT-2 on 21 May 2004 has proved the concept that the temporal resolution of a remote sensing system can be much improved by deploying the high-spatial-resolution sensor in a daily revisit orbit. The sun-synchronous and geo-synchronous orbit makes FORMOSAT-2 an ideal satellite for site surveillance. The unique orbit and the arrangement of the CCD lines on-boarded FO...

Space Weather Observations by GNSS Radio Occultation: From FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC to FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2

The joint Taiwan-United States FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate) mission, hereafter called COSMIC, is the first satellite constellation dedicated to remotely sense Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere using a technique called Global Positioning System (GPS) radio occultation (RO). The occultations yield abundant information about neutral at...

The Geometrical Comparisons of RSM and RFM for FORMOSAT-2 Satellite Images

In this paper, we compare the geometrical performance between the rigorous sensor model (RSM) and rational function model (RFM) in the sensor modeling of FORMOSAT-2 satellite images. For the RSM, we provide a least squares collocation procedure to determine the precise orbits. As for the RFM, we analyze the model errors when a large amount of quasi-control points, which are derived from the sat...
